There is no healthcare without selfcare
One doctor takes their life every three weeks.
The NHS staff vacancy rate is almost 10%
Doctors in Distress exists to promote and protect the mental health of ALL health workers, and to prevent suicide. We aim to reduce the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health in the sector and by promoting the duty of care by employers for the mental health of their workforce.
Medical professionals need psychologically safe spaces in which to reflect on the emotional impact of their work. Doctors in Distress does this through a wide range of programmes which are entirely free of charge to the participants and which are independent of their employers and are facilitated by well-qualified group analysts.
We offer creative groups as well as webinars lead by experienced medical professionals with lived experience.
We know that there can be no healthcare without selfcare and will continue to influence decision makers in the NHS to provide regular, protected time for reflective practice.
As the Medical Director for NHS Practitioner Health for many years, Dame Clare and her team treated increasing numbers of doctors and other medics who were suffering from anxiety and depression. Clare is best placed to talk from this wealth of experience about the real need for change in the working practices of our medical colleagues.
