Infective Endocarditis (IE) affects 10/10000 annually, with an in-hospital mortality of 30% and an embolic risk of 43%. International guidelines advocate multidisciplinary ‘Endocarditis team’ to expedite diagnosis to ensure superior patient outcome.
The aim was to analyse data at University Hospital Southampton [UHS], a tertiary centre, to focus on Infective Endocarditis (IE) patients and analyse the data from 282 patients over a three-year period. The objective was to evaluate the mortality and complication rate in comparison with the available data published in ESC. The data obtained from the study highlights a discrepancy between time for diagnosis between Cardiology and the entire cohort.
The study highlighted the importance of a 'Endocarditis team' to expedite diagnosis and treatment, with the aim of reducing the incidence of complications . As a result, a proposal for the establishment of an IE Multidisciplinary Team aiming to enhance patient outcomes.
