Sex differences in cardiovascular outcomes

01 Oct 2024
AGM Clinical Theatre C
This talk discusses the prevalence and incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in men and women, their biological and physiological differences, risk factors, clinical presentation and symptoms, diagnostic and screening strategies, treatment and management approaches, outcomes and prognosis, psychosocial and behavioral factors, health disparities and access to care, and research gaps and future directions. The epidemiology of CVD reveals significant differences in the onset and progression of diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke. Hormonal differences, genetic factors, and anatomical differences impact cardiovascular health. Risk factors include common risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, and smoking, as well as sex-specific risk factors like pregnancy-related conditions and menopausal status. Clinical presentation and symptoms differ between men and women, with atypical presentations in women leading to challenges in timely diagnosis. Tailored clinical assessments are important for recognizing sex-specific symptomatology. Diagnostic and screening strategies should be evaluated, and potential biases in diagnostic criteria and imaging techniques should be addressed. Treatment and management approaches should consider pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, sex-specific responses to treatments, and personalized medicine approaches. Outcomes and prognosis should consider factors influencing recovery and long-term outcomes, including comorbidities and adherence to treatment. Health disparities and access to care should be addressed, and healthcare policies and advocacy should play a role in reducing these disparities. Future directions for improving cardiovascular health and outcomes should focus on more sex-specific research and emerging trends in cardiovascular research.
