Stroke: Improving diagnosis and treatment

Streams: Neurology
A common, devastating cause of stroke is when a large artery in the brain (such as one of the middle cerebral arteries) becomes occluded by clot. Previously, the prognosis for many patients suffering such a stroke would be poor. Even urgent thrombolysis could adequately re-perfuse and save brain tissue.  Now, with the advent of a new interventional procedure called “Mechanical Thrombectomy” allied to state-of-the-art imaging, it is possible to preserve the independence of many people even up to 24 hours after the start of their stroke syndrome. This has revolutionised stroke treatment.
Learning outcomes:
  1. Clinical diagnosis of stroke
  2. Utility of acute stroke imaging
  3. Evidence base for thrombectomy
Speakers
Dr Anthony Pereira, Consultant Neurologist - St George’s Hospital
