COPD update for the generalist

Streams: Respiratory Medicine
COPD management requires appropriate diagnosis, identifying clinically relevant phenotypes and delivering high value care items systematically. These include smoking cessation, vaccinations and pulmonary rehabilitation. Delivery of these in actual clinical practice remains poor. Pharmacotherapy focuses on maximising bronchodilation with inhaled corticosteroids indicated in some.
Lung volume reduction procedures, surgical or bronchoscopic can produce dramatic benefits in appropriately selected individuals.
Learning outcomes:
  1. Identify high value interventions for COPD
  2. Understand the role of pharmacotherapy
  3. Appreciate the place of lung volume reduction techniques in COPD
Speakers
Dr Nicholas Hopkinson, Reader in Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College; Honorary Consultant Chest Physician - The Royal Brompton Hospital
