Streams: Emergency Medicine
Acute Oncology is a specialist area which focusses on the management of patients presenting with complications of their cancer diagnosis, complications of their cancer treatment, or those with an acute new presentation of cancer.
All hospitals within the United Kingdom should have an Acute Oncology service, and prompt referral of the appropriate patients is essential.
Correct management of superior vena cava obstruction, metastatic spinal cord compression and hypercalcaemia of malignancy is key to ensuring optimal outcomes and high quality patient care.
Learning outcomes:
  1. Recognise the role of the Acute Oncology team.
  2. To know when to refer a patient to Acute Oncology.
  3. Understand the presentation and management of SVCO, spinal cord compression and hypercalcaemia of malignancy.
